My main area of focus is on helping freelance translators to develop sound business practices. Following a successful seminar on How to make money as a freelance translator at CIOL’s Members’ Day in October 2011, I developed the Working Successfully as a Freelance Translator series of CPD workshops for the institute and currently deliver four of the five sessions in the series.
I have presented workshops on Essential Business Skills for Translators at the University of Westminster annually since 2013.
I also run one-day workshops on preparing for the IoLET Diploma in Translation at CIOL and was a visiting lecturer on the Diploma in Translation course (French to English) at the University of Westminster from 2012 to 2014. I facilitated a number of translation workshops on the MA in Legal Translation programme at City University from 2011 to 2013.
“I’ve worked with Karen regularly for four years. Among many other projects, she runs professional development workshops for me at the Chartered Institute of Linguists on Diploma in Translation exam preparation and on working successfully as a freelance translator – and she is certainly very well positioned to do so, being the consummate professional in every aspect of her work and a pleasure to work alongside.”

"We commissioned Karen to deliver training (in the form of one day workshops) for our organisation around good business practice for translators, focusing on those new to the profession. The training sessions have proved to be very popular, with excellent feedback from delegates, and the workshops have become a highlight of our annual training programme."
